چکیده
Abstract A group word w is said to be strongly concise in a class $${\mathcal {C}}$$ C of profinite groups if, for every G such that takes less than $$2^{\aleph _0}$$ 2 ? 0 values , the verbal subgroup ( ) finite. In this paper, we prove virtually nilpotent groups.

A note on extensions of nilpotent groups
A further advance—though it was not presented as such—was contained in Theorem 1.6 of [1], which effectively gave an example showing that the answer to our question is not always affirmative. The main purpose of this paper is to generalize both Theorem 0.1 and the counterexample contained in Theorem 1.6 of [1]. Thus we prove (cf. Theorems 2.1 and 2.3, which reproduce part (b) and part (a) of Th...
متن کاملA Note on Carnot Geodesics in Nilpotent Lie Groups
We show that strictly abnormal geodesics arise in graded nilpotent Lie groups. We construct such a group, for which some Carnot geodesics are strictly abnormal and, in fact, not normal in any subgroup. In the 2-step case we also prove that these geodesics are always smooth. Our main technique is based on the equations for the normal and abnormal curves, that we derive (for any Lie group) explic...
متن کاملA Note on Chain Conditions in Nilpotent Rings and Groups
Maximal and minimal conditions for ideals in associative rings have often been considered, but little seems to be known of these conditions in non-associative rings, or of chain conditions on the non-normal subgroups of a group. Moreover, it is usual to assume the condition for one-sided ideals in noncommutative rings, and the weaker condition for two-sided ideals rarely appears. In this note w...
متن کاملA Note on Automorphisms of Free Nilpotent Groups
We exhibit normal subgroups of a free nilpotent group F of rank two and class three, which have isomorphic finite quotients but are not conjugate under any automorphism of F . A remarkable fact about free profinite groups of finite rank is that any isomorphism between finite quotients of such a group F lifts to an automorphism of F . This is true, more generally, if F a free pro-Cgroup of finit...

γ = c0 + c1p+ c2p + · · · = (. . . c3c2c1c0)p, with ci ∈ Z, 0 ≤ ci ≤ p− 1, called the digits of γ. This ring has a topology given by a restriction of the product topology—we will see this below. The ring Zp can be viewed as Z/pZ for an ‘infinitely high’ power n. This is a useful idea, for example, in the study of Diophantine equations: if such an equation has a solution in the integers, then it...
